i can feel you slipping away

wind kicked up october heels with crystalline lit view over night los angeles. the first blink of goodbye to the equally misunderstood summer. i'm looking at a pair of suede black boots by the black leather couch. the stillness of each is but isn't. and so we go apropos with unend on finit. glass housed angry and lingered in keep singing. cut and print in a red wine dash from loss to love to quietly seperated versions of nights' goodbyes. one to one hundred through all shades of hazel eyes.

director nathan cox is "nostalgia for an imaginary past", the title of the work he's creating for "the last man". nathan started collecting super 8 reels a year or so ago-finding them from estate sales, ebay. i watched some of the footage with him last week, each reel was a discovery. there was a sense of eerie - like what if we find a film that shows a murder! so far this has not happened...

we were both taken by the sound of the projector, the countless faces and families on the old film. the haunting feeling was made existentially afraid when nathan commented "everyone on here is dead". further questions...who are these people? how did their memories end up on sale on ebay? why do we collect everything as we do if it all ends up somewhere else. and the question too, what becomes of our recordings?

this abandoned town is hard to reach as it is not accessible by road. set beside train tracks, drawbridge used to be a hunting village and trains once stopped here. now the houses sink into the bay, nature swallowing evidence of commerce and life. caitlin strom and n'jeri eaton created a story and shot at drawbridge on 16 mm for the song "pour l'amore de la mere". this sets the tone for the ghostly narrative, the sense of loss redemption and change, loneliness but not alone.

it's impossible to imagine what goes into one single animated picture. melanie mandl and nick kononoles are working through the night creating a piece rich lee wrote called "moon" for the tune stay with me. the story follows a girl's journey saving a post apocalyptic world with the light of the moon. the above picture shows the character and the set.

leave for dreaming. dreaming for leaves. from leaving, dreams. something about the interchangable nature of this title for the film appeals to me. throughout the piece we visit the same themes: loss, leaving, the impossibility of finding what's lost when you return, change, searching for a home, death. all of these ideas come as dreams, what are we really ever doing? what is present. what falls away is always and is near...we dream of leaving but we never do, the places stay in our minds. we leave to dream and what happens when we do? this is the beginning.

back to la, the next day we shot with director writer actor rick gradone (who won the fringe festival last year for the one man show he wrote, semi-permanent). rick directed a piece for "england's dreaming" with actors rob zabrecky (also noted magician www.robzabrecky.com) & mageina tovah (spiderman and upcoming farenheit 451). this is a sort of ghost story too with beautiful scenes shot underwater and against the california landscape. a picture of rob and mageina.

i've not written this blog as intended. blame the reason we started the blog...now that i've got some seconds of time (turned a huge amount of footage over to our editor, joseph tamas, rock star) i can give some updates.

flew to ny to shoot "death is the road to awe" with director writer actor pat healy, who currently lives in manhattan where he writes for the gabrielle byrne show "in treatment". we took the camera all around brooklyn, ended up on a rooftop for a particularly epic sunset. here we are shooting what we determined is a piece about an industrial ghost town. i felt like i was in the film, the world really mirrored the thought behind the idea.

Clint Mansell and Sonus Quartet to Perform Cult Director Darren Aronofsky Film Tracks at 35th Annual Ghent International Film Festival

For the 35th edition of the Ghent International Film Festival (October 7th -18th), Clint Mansell and Sonus Quartet will be performing atmospheric tunes from Darren Aronofsky films (Pi, Requiem For A Dream, The Fountain). Like Aronofsky in the film world, Mansell has garnered an immense cult following for his soundtrack work, known for its dark, hypnotic beauty. The concert will be held on October 16th in the theatre hall at the Vooruit.

Clint Mansell started out as the front man for British electronica-punk group Pop Will Eat Itself. He broke into the world of scoring when his friend, director Darren Aronofsky, hired him to write the soundtrack for Pi, his debut feature film. Since then, Mansell has scored Aronofsky’s two other films, Requiem for a Dream and The Fountain. Mansell’s unique sense of style is difficult to pin down, a mix of anything in the minor-key palette available to him, from swelling strings to heavy electric guitar and tribal drums. For his work on The Fountain, he teamed up with Scottish post-rock band Mogwai and Kronos Quartet to produce the most exquisite, powerful soundtrack experience of 2007. Not only did it win him Best Original Soundtrack at the World Soundtrack Awards, but also the Public Choice Award, voted by film music fans from around the world. For his concert in Ghent, Mansell will be bringing a few special guests along: a rock band and Sonus Quartet, a string ensemble. They will be performing Aronofsky film tracks, complete with film clips pulsating in the background.

With its focus on film music, the Ghent International Film Festival has carved out its own unique niche on the international circuit. True to form, the 35th edition has another three music concerts on the menu. On October 15th, Gabriel Yared will be kicking things off with music from Anthony Minghella films (The English Patient, The Talented Mr Ripley), followed by a concert with Darren Aronofsky composer Clint Mansell (The Fountain, Requiem for a Dream) on October 16th. On October 17th , folk rock sensation Kadril will be performing tracks from Brokeback Mountain, Shakespeare in Love, Walk the Line, Barry Lyndon and Black Cat White Cat. It all comes to a close on October 18th with the World Soundtrack Awards ceremony, followed by a concert with Tuur Florizoone (Moscow, Belgium), Oscar winner Dario Marianelli (Atonement) and David Lynch composer Angelo Badalamenti (Twin Peaks, the City of Lost Children, Mulholland Drive).
